Catherine Hammerton

I am a graduate of the Royal College or Art (2005) and a Textile Maker working predominantly in paper and cloth.

My work is closely connected to nature and the common lands that I have grown up around. Using wild flora as visual metaphors for my matrilineality alongside the notion of what it is to be common, what it is to belong – hiraeth – and the plant lore traditionally shared by women.

These ideas culminate as objects and texts; conversations of kinship, sisterhood and sameness. Overlooked blooms seemingly gathered from these beloved places and spaces in moments lost to time, silently saying the things we hold within. Making as a tool for remembering, honouring the lore of my childhood and celebrating what is to be found in the loss.

In and around my practice I am an enthusiastic educator, sharing Printed Textile and Surface Pattern Design skills with others. I have over 15 years of teaching experience across Higher Education institutions (BA and Masters levels)
FE colleges (Level 3) alongside a wealth of community outreach and intergenerational projects for Schools, Museums and other organisations. It’s a privilege to share my knowledge and passion for making to empower others.

When I am not in my studio making work or teaching, I can mostly be found flying kites at the beach with my young daughter or planting seeds to inspire new works in our garden. Ever the dreamer.
